Jodie Hill

This nomination, submitted by Chris Shaw, relates to Jodie Hill’s tireless work to bring the issues of mental health in the workplace into the forefront of the commercial environment.

For some considerable time, Jodie has been a ceaseless campaigner to require businesses to train and have in place a Mental Health First Aider in the Workplace – her mission is to change the law to require this training and post to become compulsory.

Who will the initiative help/who has it helped already?

Jodie is in the early stages of publicity for her campaign. She is currently focusing on changing opinions at grassroots level, by meeting with people in a position of influence, including MPs and other Mental Health Awareness Champions.

What’s worked?

Jodie has already gained a significant degree of media coverage, including in the Yorkshire Post, Sky TV and the Law Society Gazette.

She has had meetings with Paula Sherriff MP, the opposition spokesperson and Shadow Minister for Mental Health issues, and is due to meet with several other prominent politicians.

What have you learnt? Any challenges?

One challenge that she as nominee (and me as sponsor) has learned is not to be discouraged, to keep on pushing, and never to give up on your goals.

What’s next?

More supporters, more petition signatures and – the ultimate goal – a change in the law, to bring Mental Health in the Workplace into line with physical first aid.

What advice, contacts or resources would help you?

More Champions, ambassadors and supporters of the campaign – these can all be achieved through the ongoing publicity programme that is in place.

Why we’re sharing these stories

An individual or organisation from each of our five categories will be recognised at our Igniting Inspiration recognition event in November, but we want to publish all relevant stories to spread awareness of all the positive work that goes on in the North!
