Becky Taylor from Investors in the Environment

Becky Taylor

Becky says: “In September 2016, after over 20 years industrial experience, I gave up a steady full-time job to take over and run the Y&H region of Investors in the Environment, along with John Mooney from Pennine-Pack.

Investors in the Environment (iiE) is an established, national environmental accreditation and membership scheme. It’s designed to help small and medium-sized businesses to save money, reduce their impact on the environment and get formally recognised for their green credentials.

It is all about ‘doing’ the right things, taking actions to achieve Environmental goals, and receiving recognition and support. In the 12 months since we’ve been running the scheme, we’ve increased our active membership by over 50%!”

Who will the initiative help/who has it helped already?

Investors in the Environment works with over 30 businesses in the Yorkshire & Humber region. We will continue to grow and develop the network with any business that wants to save money, implement good working practices and reduce their impact on the environment.

Our members are organisations ranging from NHS foundation trusts, county councils, colleges, and businesses in the manufacturing, distribution, printing, and healthcare sectors, to name just a few.

The great thing about Investors in the Environment (iiE) is that it’s suitable for organisations of all types and sizes – from sole traders through to large multi-site employers.

Investors is an achievable, affordable environmental accreditation scheme. Businesses we work with don’t need to have any prior experience or in-house environmental expertise to achieve their accreditations.

What’s worked?

Taking the personal approach! Taking time to get to know our members’ businesses and how we can best help them to improve environmental initiatives and increase their resource efficiency. It also saves them money in the process!

We run a fun and varied schedule of events that are free for our members to enjoy. These include site tours, members coaching and networking events and our very special annual Awards Ceremony.

What have you learnt? Any challenges?

Everything! And especially challenging ingrained behaviours and outgrown ways of operating. It’s a lot easier to spot this when you are looking in from the outside. You also need to be sensitive and realise that there is probably a very good reason why businesses are run in a particular way.

What’s next?

We plan to maintain our momentum by increasing our value to members via high quality events, personalised business plans including a step-by step progression approach, as well as our popular ‘first hour free’ open door policy on almost any environmental issue.

What advice, contacts or resources would help you?

Finally, Becky says: I would love to increase my confidence and attend more business networking events in the Yorkshire region.

Why we’re sharing these stories

An individual or organisation from each of our five categories will be recognised at our Igniting Inspiration recognition event in November, but we want to publish all relevant stories to spread awareness of all the positive work that goes on in our region!
